Busy in the day, more of a pleasure to wonder at night

Narrow bustling streets with vietnemese going about there business and the smell of food are the mood of these strees at night.

>>> The beauty of Ham Rong Mountain in sa pa, Lao Cai

Small art shops in and around bars, cafe’s & restaurants, intermingled with imitation North Face clothing shops make for an interesting place as you head down to sword lake.

The food everywhere we ate was fresher than ever & the choice of upmarket or ramblers bars gave a wide spread on the types of places people like to drink. You can buy cheap original artwork aswell of copies of the masters which only a proffessional could spot. In the day its another matter all together, its absolute chaos there must be 2 mopeds for every person living there and dont be surprised if you see someone actually in a shop shopping on there moped. Its like a tsunami wave after wave of mopeds through the streets.

Even the night market people drive round the stalls on ther bikes. But for all the chaos its like Tokyo, naturally organised somehow. In all our time in viet nam we didnt see an accident and we even joined in hireing mopeds everyday and joining the masses in transit which was exilirating. Whether there are traffic lights or zebra crossings it doesnt matter the traffic wont stop for you. You just need to walk, dont think just walk. Forget everything you were taught about crossing the road. You have to put your faith in others, literally close your eyes and use the force, you will be surprised but your confidence in not being hit will grow till you dont even stop before crossing, you just walk.

An area not far from hanoi center is about to be re-developed by the Koreans in a 6.5 Billion investment by the Vietnemes Government to bring the city forward into the 21st Century. The beauty of this place is it seems stalled in the 1960s which I fear will be lost in the near future. So if you have been putting of a trip hear for any reason, dont wait any longer. Vietnemese Airways Have recently started direct flights from Manchester to Hanoi.

One night around eleven while walking these streets, we passed a house with its front doors wide open. By chance Everton who are my football team were on the telly in the front room. The owner a 50+ year old lady noticed we paused in suprise and although she spoke no english undertood this team belonged to us and even though we are two 40 year old men had no problem letting us watch the first half while she done the ironing. I loved it its great…..

Halong bay legend and history

The beauty of Ha Long Bay consists in its mountains, water, clouds, caves and grottoes. Many, however, do not realise that Ha Long was also the cradle of an ancient people who helped create the present Hạ Long culture.

Halong bay legend

The legend of Hạ Long has it that, “Once upon a time, soon after the Việt people established their country, invaders came. The Jade Emperor sent Mother Dragon and her Child Dragons down to earth to help the Việt people fight against their enemy. Right at the time invaders’ boats were rushing to the shore, the dragons landed down on earth. The dragons immediately sent out from their mouths a lot of pearls, which then turned into thousands of stone islands emerging in the sea like great walls challenging the invaders’ boats. The fast boats couldn’t manage to stop and crashed into the islands and into each other and broke into pieces.
After the victory, Mother Dragon and Child Dragons didn’t return Heaven but stayed on earth at the place where the battle had occurred. The location Mother Dragon landed is nowadays Hạ Long Bay and where Child Dragons descended is now Bái Tử Long. The dragons’ tails waving the water created Long Vĩ (present Trà Cổ peninsula) and formed a fine sand beach over ten kilometers long”.

Halong cultural and historical value

The beauty of Ha Long Bay consists in its mountains, water, clouds, caves and grottoes. Many, however, do not realise that Ha Long was also the cradle of an ancient people who helped create the present Hạ Long culture.

At the end of 1937, a Swedish archaeologist named Anderson, together with two French archaeologist sisters named Conani, journeyed for months through Hạ Long sea. They climbed mountains, visited caves and explored the coastline, finding many stone artefacts: axes, grinding tables, sewing needles and jewellery. They called the culture that formed these remnants “Ngọc Vừng” In the months and years following, Vietnamese archaeologists continued their research and made many excavations; discovering more archaeological sites, such as Ðồng Mang, Xích Thổ and Soi Nhụ. Through an area of some hundreds of square kilometres, they discovered many stone artefacts and pieces of broken designed pottery.

Throughout its development, Hạ Long has had a particularly important position; being situated on the communication routes between China, Japan and Thailand. Gradually, it became the centre of cultural and commercial exchanges between these countries and ancient viet nam. The book Comprehensive History of Ðậi Việt reads: “In the second month of the spring of the year of Kỷ Tỵ, the 10th year of the reign of Lý Anh Tông (1149), the commercial port of Vân Ðồn was established.” In the long period overlapping the Lý, Trần and Lê dynasties, Vân Ðồn was a place of busy commercial and cultural exchanges between viet nam and its South-East Asian neighbours. A remaining vestige of the ancient commercial port is Cái Làng Wharf (Quan Lan).

Vân Ðồn is also a site that witnessed glorious feats of war against the invasion of the Yuan-Mongols aggressors. It was here that the enemy, General Trương Hổ, had an entire fleet of food supply boats set ablaze by Trần Khánh Dư. This contributed greatly to the victory of Bạch Đằng.
Closely linked to this animated commercial centre were many religious architectural constructions; built to meet the requirements of both traders and the population that practised Catholicism and Buddhism.
At Soi Nhụ, researchers found three fossilised human skeletons.

In particular, in the central zone of the present UNESCO World Heritage Site area, there have been recent discoveries of fascinating archaeological finds: Mê Cung, Thiên Long and Tiên Ông grottoes. The quantity of ancient shellfish in the Melina Spring, indicated by the 1.5 m-thick heaps of shells, amounts to hundreds of cubic metres.

The archaeological sites of the Hạ Long culture are distributed everywhere, but are mostly found on the sandy beaches of the coastline, and in these caves and grottoes: Ngọc Vừng, Tuần Châu, Xích Thô and Ðông Mang. There are also sites far from the coast, such as Thoi Giêng and Tiên Ông. Wherever the remnants of the first peoples of Hạ Long are found, they seem to bear a common characteristic: the same materials, techniques, forms and designs. Scientists have called it the “Hạ Long culture of the late period of the new Stone Age.”

In Cái Làng Wharf, along to 200m-long coastline scientists had found broken pieces of pottery and china forming a 0.6 m-thick layer. Ages date from between the Lý and Trần dynasties. Here, there are also foundations of ancient houses once built along the wharf. Apart from here, many other ancient wharves have been found, such as: Cống Ðông, Công Yên, Ngọc Vừng, Quan Lạn and Cái Bầu. They have featured similar artefacts.

On Cống Ðông Island alone, four pagodas were built. Among them, the Lâm Pagoda is one of the most ancient in the area. It was built under the Trần Dynasty with three gates, a shrine to Buddha, anterior cult room and house of ancestors. On the north-east side of the pagoda was a tower, the remnants of which indicate it was a large and solemn construction.

Things to do at the West Lake (Ho Tay)

Ho Tay is Hanoi's biggest lake. According to a legend, it was created when a Chinese buffalo mistook the sound of a bell of a pagoda for its mother's voice and ran away, creating the lake by stepping into a small hollow... I'd say, it must have been a giant little buffalo!!!

West Lake Ice-Cream

I would like to come to West Lake to enjoy ice-cream. West Lake Ice-Cream is near the northern end of the street, opposite Tran Quoc Pagoda, and besides the crowds outside, is easily spotted by its flashing neon sign, which alternately reads Kem, Kem Ho, Kem Ho Tay, and may or may show a visual of a bowl of ice cream.

West Lake

Ho Tay is the largest of all the lakes in Ha Noi. The lake is on the northwest part of the city. Long ago, the lake was a branch of the Red river but later, as the river changed course, the lake remained a body of water just west of the river. There are many legends associated with West Lake. The most popular is the legend of the golden buffalo. As the story goes, there once was a medicine man who was a giant. He is well known in Vietnam for his medicine practice and the king often used him to treat the royal family.

A must if you are in Hanoi

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is really a must go as he is regarded very much as a father of Vietnam. It is appropriate to go and pay your respects to Ho Chi Minh ( the body is maintained visible in the cool environment) and learn about history of Vietnam's struggle for freedom and independence. Beutifully mainteined grounds and preserved "home" of Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh mausoleum history

Construction work began on September 2, 1973 and the structure was formally inaugurated on August 29, 1975. The mausoleum was inspired by Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow but incorporates distinct Vietnamese architectural elements, such as the sloping roof. The exterior is made of gray granite, while the interior is gray, black, and red polished stone. The mausoleum’s portico has the words “Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh” inscribed across it, meaning “President Ho Chi Minh.”

Welcome to Ho Tay Lake Water Park, Hanoi, Vietnam

I very like this place! Ho Tay Lake Water Park is a famous Hanoi Amusement Park. West lake park – a complex of modern and attractive entertainment is at the northwest of the lake (116 Lac Long Quan road, Tay Ho district). Standing in the shore of the windy and romantic west lake, its two sides border the lake.

Vietnam cuisine in eyes of foreign visitors

The first thing tourists experience when they arrive in a country is the food. They can learn a lot from what they eat. It can explain the cultural values of a nation.

A long queue of customers at a Pho shop is a familiar sight for residents in the ancient quarter of Hanoi.

Pho is one of the Vietnam traditional food

On a day close to the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, this restaurant received a group of special guests.

They are international chefs from the US , France and Indonesia . Despite the long queue, they showed no sign of impatience. For them, tasting Vietnamese Pho is an experience that cannot be missed.

After enjoying the traditional Vietnamese dish, the chefs asked a local cook to take them to a market to discover what goes into the dish. They also learnt to cook some other traditional dishes.

People working in tourism say food is one of the most important attractions for tourists.

Nguyen Quoc Ky, CEO of Vietravel, said that two of the world’s top ten street dishes belong to Vietnam and it indicates that local cuisine is likely to become a national tourism trademark.

It can be said that Vietnamese cuisine already has a firm place in international friends’ hearts.

Cook Phan Thi Tuyet stressed that Vietnamese traditional food is a balance of yin and yang.

She said international students at her cooking class share the view that Vietnamese food is a wonderful harmony of meat and vegetable and that it is not too hot or too heavy and that is good for health.

Vietnam ’s cuisine was ranked third in a list of the 10 healthiest ethnic cuisines compiled by CNN. It stands after only that of Greece and California fresh food. It shows how highly Vietnamese cuisine is valued around the world.
